Position Statement
Audiology, as compared to other doctoral-level health-care professionals, function with much less autonomy. Dentists actively encourage preventive services and visit schools to discuss dental health to students frequently enough that nearly all children are familiar with at least the term dentist. Typically, individuals experiencing vision difficulties directly seek services with an optometrist, not their primary care physician or ophthalmologist. Audiology does not currently function in the same way, even when school-aged children have periodic hearing screenings. So I ask, why do hearing screenings cease after high school? Does the ability to hear become less significant in college, the workforce, or simply enjoying life with our family and friends?

Audiologists are the hearing health-care professionals and I am optimistic for the day when audiologists are sought out first because of that expertise. Great strides have already been made to create this—the move to a more unified doctoral degree, current legislation of direct access, and the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE). Even with these important strides, many more are needed for the level of autonomy that the profession of audiology deserves. With your support, I would be honored to serve with you as we embark on this monumental journey.
