Academy Partners with HIA on Capitol Hill

The Academy is working closely with the Hearing Industries Association (HIA) to support the Hearing Aid Tax Credit bill (H.R. 1882), a key legislative priority for both groups.  Academy President Erin Miller, AuD joined HIA Executive Director Andy Bopp, on June 11 and 12, for two days of visits with Members of Congress in support of the bill.  Dr. Miller crisscrossed Capitol Hill undeterred by DC’s sweltering summer heat and the arrival of President Obama’s lengthy motorcade, to talk about issues important to the Academy.  She met with Senator Sherrod Brown’s (D-OH) staff about pending VA legislation.  She also visited several Ohio Congressional offices to build support for the EDHI bill (H.R. 1344): Tim Ryan (D-13th), Marcia Fudge (D-11th) and David Joyce (R-14th).

Dr. Miller represented the Academy as a sponsor of the Friends of the Congressional Hearing Health Caucus (FCHHC) briefing luncheon, where Caucus Chair Representative David McKinley (R-WVA), and EDHI bill sponsor Representative Lois Capps (D-CA), spoke to a packed house about the need to reauthorize EDHI programs.  Representative Bobbie Rush (D-IL), also a Member of the Energy & Commerce Committee, stood up and announced he would cosponsor the bill.  Brenda Fitzgerald, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health and Dana Suskind, Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago made moving presentations about improving outcomes for children.

Following the briefing luncheon, Academy and HIA representatives met with and were well received in the offices of Representatives from five Ohio Congressional districts: Michael Turner (R-10th), Pat Tiberi (R-12th) ,Bob Gibbs (R-7th), Brad Wenstrup (R-2nd) and Bill Johnson (R-6th).  All were very positive about the Hearing Aid Tax Credit bill and invited our follow up.

A real highlight for Dr. Miller was to see that every Congressional office she visited had the colors of the Cleveland Cavaliers on display, and all are rooting for the team to win the NBA basketball finals!

In this whirlwind of activity, Academy and HIA representatives also attended a fundraising event for Representative Devin Nunes (R-CA 22), the lead sponsor of the Hearing Aid Tax Credit bill (H.R. 1882).  The Academy joined HIA as an original sponsor of the event.  The Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) also sponsored the event.  The fundraiser was held at the distinguished Republican Capitol Hill Club, famous for its many statues of elephants.  Representative Nunes spoke about the importance of bipartisan cooperation in the successful repeal of the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula.

Overall, Dr. Miller had a successful, productive and very busy visit to DC.  Go Cavaliers!
