On October 30, President Biden issued an Executive Order (EO) to establish standards for artificial intelligence safety and security, “while protecting Americans’ privacy, promoting innovation and competition, and advancing American leadership on the issue.”
In the area of health care, the EO calls for:
- The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish a safety program to receive reports of harms or unsafe health-care practices involving AI—while advancing the responsible use of AI in health care and the development of affordable and life-saving drugs.
- A pilot program of the National AI Research Resource to provide AI researchers access to key resources and data in areas such as health care.
- Clear guidance to federal health-care benefits programs to keep AI algorithms from being used to exacerbate discrimination.
