Beignets (pronounced BEN-yays) are deep fried pastries that date back to the 18th century. French colonists brought their recipe with them to their new home in America and it’s been a part of New Orleans and Creole culture ever since. Traditional Louisiana style beignets are typically square or rectangular in shape and dusted with various toppings such as powdered sugar, cinnamon, or even caramel, fruits, or chocolate. Café au lait is typically served with the beignets to create a satisfying treat. Perhaps the most famous place to enjoy beignets in New Orleans is the wonderful Café du Monde located in the French Market found at 1101 N. Peters Street. The original Café du Monde first opened in 1862 and according to their web site they are open 24/7, closing only on Christmas Day (and when the occasional hurricane gets too close to the city).
Another way to enjoy beignets while in New Orleans is to attend the ABA Meet and Greet on Thursday, March 27, from 2–3 pm in the Expo Hall. Come by, say hi, and enjoy some authentic beignets and other treats on us! We’ll have information available about ABA certificate and certification programs and have plenty of materials for students who are moving on to their first audiology job after graduation. Come view our “baseball cards,” giving you all the latest information on each state’s requirements and licensure guidelines.
Enjoy a little taste of New Orleans courtesy of the ABA. We hope to see you there!
