“I’m an audiologist.” “Really… What’s that?” Sound familiar? This speaks directly to the ongoing issues we face in every area of our diverse practice settings—clinical, pediatric, academic, educational, and all other settings. That said though, it is a blessing as well a curse. The diverse nature of audiology is what allows us to explore and participate in the rich landscape of being hearing and balance health-care professionals. Diversity in our scope of practice is what makes audiology fun!
The challenges lie in nurturing professional growth in such a diverse field, and bringing consumers to the understanding that audiologists are their primary source for hearing healthcare. I believe that these two challenges alone are at the root of all initiatives the Academy will continue to pursue for the foreseeable future, and that the explosive changes in the climate of healthcare in general will only compound the nature and urgency of our work.
Our Academy has made great strides in advancing professional growth and development, as well as furthering consumer awareness through legislative initiatives, supporting research and evidence-based/reflective practice guidelines, and recruiting talented young professionals into our midst. However, much remains to be done. I look forward to working with our Academy to achieve the goal of one day having the response to the comment
