Academy PAC Has Successful 2018 Midterm Election

November 13, 2018 Government Relations News

Although there are still several races to be settled, it is certain that we will see a split Congress when the House and Senate reconvene in January for the start of the 116th Congress. Overall, both Republicans and Democrats can claim important victories on the night with the Democrats having won the House of Representatives and should have a sizable majority in that chamber, while the Republicans added at least one and, in all likelihood, two seats to their Senate majority. AAA’s political action committee (PAC) prepared for this possibility by supporting a bipartisan slate of candidates through significant contributions to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).

Over the 2017-2018 election cycle, AAA’s PAC spent $40,000, with $23,000 going to Republicans and Republican candidates and $17,000 going to Democrats and Democratic candidates. Of the money allocated to candidates, 82.5 percent went to candidates who were victorious on Tuesday. The Academy was pleased to see several of our hearing health care champions like Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), Representative Brett Guthrie (R-KY), Representative Dave Loebsack (D-PA), Representative David McKinley (R-WV), and Representative Mike Thompson (D-CA) won re-election.

Likewise, three candidates that the Academy PAC supported through local events arranged through the Grassroots Advocacy Network won their election. Academy members and advocates attended events in home districts for Reps. Tim Walberg (R-MI) and John Garamendi (D-CA) as well as Congressional candidate Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA). The Academy is pleased to be able to continue working with these members of Congress as well as the new members of Congress in the 116th Congress.

The Academy’s PAC is supported entirely by contributions from Academy members. Click here to learn more about the PAC and make your annual gift.
