|Cerumen Management Workshop: Navigating Your Way Out of a Sticky Situation||Sam Bittel, AuD||Audiologists should be well versed in cerumen removal, particularly as the entry point for vestibular and hearing health care. As an autonomous health-care practitioner, managing cerumen in a competent and skilled way is a crucial skill we should all possess. This two-part didactic and hand-on workshop will provide attendees the foundation and knowledge they need to become experts in cerumen management. This workshop will cover the anatomy/physiology of the ear canal, properties of cerumen, technical aspects of removal, managing incidents, infection control, state regulations, and billing. The second portion of this workshop will begin with a demonstration of different removal techniques and equipment, and end with participants getting extensive hands-on experience.||LL101|
|Demystifying Approaches to Cochlear Implant Management||Mike Scott, AuD; Jessica Messersmith, PhD||Participants will be exposed to a variety of cochlear implant programming approaches appropriate for pediatric and adult patients. Open-format presentations will set the groundwork with basic approaches to cochlear implant evaluation and programming, while allowing for participants to query the presenters throughout the session. There will be ample opportunity to discuss difficult cases and learn about possible options from fellow colleagues. Hands-on learning stations will further enhance the troubleshooting and implant management experience. Participants should come prepared with questions and cases to discuss throughout the Learning Lab.||LL102|
|An Ounce of Prevention: Music, Noise, and Hearing Conservation in your Clinic||Frank Wartinger, AuD||This joint session will be a comprehensive overview of clinical hearing conservation services, as well as an in-depth discussion of audiology services for musicians and music-lovers (concert goers and users of personal music players). The lab will include review of evidence-based practice recommendations, musician-specific hearing products, and non-technology techniques to prevent noise and music-induced hearing disorders. Hands-on learning opportunities will include in-ear monitor and custom hearing protection demonstration as well as verification methods for custom attenuation devices.||LL103|
|Trust But Verify: Building Upon Hearing Aid Verification Basics||Lindsey Jorgensen, PhD||Verification of hearing aids goes beyond “hitting the target” and verifying the aided output of the aid. There are many other features and accessories that are within current hearing aid technology. This learning lab will include discussion and hands-on of verifying advanced features within hearing aids as well as verifying the accessories go along with the products we purchase for our patients.||LL104|
|What’s New in Balance Function Testing?||Richard Roberts, PhD: Gary P. Jacobson, PhD; Kelsey Hatton, AuD; Kathryn F. Makowiec, AuD||This learning lab will take place at the Vanderbilt University Campus, the purpose of this session is to share our experiences with newer technology and an evolving understanding of the role of various structures underlying balance system function. During the past several years, our ability to assess function of the vestibular system has improved with advances in technology and a greater understanding of the role of various structures regarding the processes collectively referred to as balance function. Two primary measures receiving increased attention are the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) and the video head impulse tests (vHIT). The Vestibular Sciences program, including our laboratories and clinics at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, have been at the forefront of refining these techniques to obtain the most useful results. An improvement in the understanding of these techniques and results directly impacts: (1) how clinicians obtain essential case history information, and also, (2) how clinicians integrate the results of these new measures with results of existing measures to identify patterns of vestibular system impairment. The purpose of this learning experience is to provide attendees information they can implement immediately in the assessment of patients with dizziness and imbalance. |Public Relations Media Training||Vicki Bendure||In a world where the news cycle moves 24/7, it is imperative that anyone involved with the media fully understands the process and how to control the message. Not only will media training help you in working with the media but it will also provide tools to help you develop concise messaging when speaking with employees, patients, and the general public. This session will provide an overview of media basics as well as tips for interviewing on-camera, with print and online media and how to conduct radio interviews. It will teach you how to best determine the reporter’s agenda and how to handle the most difficult questions. The ambush interview will be discussed along with how to best build proactive relationships with media—when to reach out and when to remain silent. Lastly, everyone is vulnerable to crisis and the session will look at defining a crisis with everything from handling a disgruntled employee to law suits and how to get ahead of media coverage and contain social media.||LL106|
